Earth Leakage Relays

We provide Earth Fault Protection through Core Balance Current Transformer (CBCT). Core Balance CTs are specially design CTs used to detect Earth faults. It is a ring type CT through which the cables carrying current of all the three phases (R-Y- B) are passed through. (In a 3 phase 3 wire system) Under normal operating conditions, summation of current through the three phases shall be equal to zero. In event of a fault, the summation of the current shall no longer remain zero (zero sequence current shall flow during earth fault) & thus the fault can be detected.

Phase Unbalance Relay

When the power supply voltage to the motor is unbalanced, it the resulting unbalanced currents in the three phases. When the supply voltage is unbalanced, the positive sequence component reduces and results in low power delivery.

 

For example if an unbalance of only 5% ( R phase = 415 V, Y phase = 415 V, B phase = 436 V) can reduce the out put by 25%, even though the motor continues to draw the same current as at the time of balanced condition. This means that the motor current has to increase under unbalanced condition in order to deliver the same power. This increase will result in motor heating.

 

Phase reversal in a three phase induction motor can be dangerous when the opposite direction not allow in certain applications like Non reversing gear box, Screw Compressors, Certain Specialized Pumps, Blower fan etc. In certain cases it hazards to operating personnel.

 

Phase reversal in a motor feeder produces a negative sequence of nearly 100% and is well detected by a relay with negative sequence / Phase Reverse protection.

 

Considering the above details, it can be easily concluded that a motor protection relay will provide an effective protection to the motor only when it is equipped to measure the negative sequence component level in the motor feeder. The same feature can be made disable when relay is used for Crane, Hoist or any other application when Motor rotates in Forward & Reverse both direction.

Locked Motor Protection Relays

Locked rotor current is the amount of current a motor would draw if you energize the motor and the rotor (the spinning shaft) doesn't spin. At typical overload event is that of a motor bearing failure in which a bearing begins to seize the motor shaft but yet still allows the shaft to spin. This type of bearing failure causes a continuous drag on the motor rotor, causing a high motor current.

Our Micro Controller based Motor Protection Relays will then gives an indication that an abnormal over current condition took place rather than a phase loss or other fault. The bearing problem can then be detected and the bearings replaced before the motor get burn out.

Single Phase Relays

We offer Micro Controller based Motor Protection Relay for cost effective solution against Bi-metallic thermal overload relay. This relay provides very precise protection against Overload, Single Phasing & Current Unbalance which are the basic reasons for Induction Motor failure. Bi-metal relays fail to offer complete protection against single phasing mainly because of the following condition.

Our Micro Controller based Motor Protection relay senses the negative sequence components which are dangerous to the motor. Thermal overload relay do not sense these component & sense only rise in level of motor current. Negative sequence gets generated because of the unbalance in the system supply. Micro Controller based motor protection relay can be programmed for a specific unbalance & trip the circuit. The thermal overload relay cannot give protection against unbalance in the supply. It is not possible to provide the same protection by using Thermal Overload Relay.

Phase Failure Protection Relays

Every year around 30% to 40% motor burnt out. The rewinding cost is almost 30% to 60% of the cost of new motor. Most people prefer to rewind, rather than replacing it with new one. Approximately more than 75% motors are found rewound motors. Once the rewinding is done, comparatively substandard quality process than the new motor, which is manufactured by deputed motor manufacturer.

 

The quality of a rewound motors does not remain same as that of original one. These rewound motors consume more power, generate heat, contribute to losses & so develop a tendency of burning again & again.

 

Rewound motors are having major drawback is that cost & time, in addition to power loss are major expenses. In many cases, a voltage sensing single phasing preventer is used as a protection in addition to thermal overload relay. It fails to protect the motor at times when needed.

 

Considering the fact that most of these motors are equipped with a BMR (Bi Metal Thermal Overload Relay), which is mainly responsible for the motor protection & hence it is necessary to review the suitability of these relays for “reliable motor protection.”

Dry Run Protection Relays

Submersible pump should not operate in Dry Run (NO Load) condition for its better performance and longer life cycle. Short Circuit Protection Relays

A short circuit is a direct contact between two points of different electric potential. It could be happen because of damage to the varnish insulating the conductors, loose, broken or stripped wires or cables, metal foreign bodies, conducting deposits (dust, moisture, etc.), seepage of water or other conducting fluids, wrong wiring in assembly or maintenance.

 

A short circuit results in a sudden surge of current which can reach several hundred times the working current within milliseconds. A short circuit can have devastating effects and severely damage equipment. It is typified by two phenomena.

Three Phase Motor Protection Relay

We supply a very wide range of Microprocessor based Motor Protection Relays. Thermal Overload Relay is expected to protect motor mainly against single phasing faults & overloading faults. In both cases have serious limitations.

Major causes for motor burning:

  • Phase Failure
  • Overloading

Phase Failure:

The condition occur due to fuse failure, loose of connection, loss of phase supply, or the phase line’s becoming dead etc. In this case the motor continues to run the remaining two phases, drawing heavy current through remaining two winding, which leads motor burnt out.

In case of phase failure the phase that has failed. Sometimes this back emf can be equivalent to input supply voltage. A voltage sensing relay or device predicts it as healthy condition & will not trip the motor that will continue to run on two phase. But in current sensing relay it is not affected. Under phase failure condition current in the phase that has failed, goes to zero & thus current sensing relay detects phase failure.

Moreover voltage sensing relay will more to get faulty as they have to take three phase voltage into their electronic circuit for sensing & hence all the spares, surges & fluctuations of supply affect life of its sensing circuit components. In case of current sensing relays the electronic circuit senses very low voltage current signals coming out from output of CTS & hence it sensing circuit components operate in safe supply conditions.

Overloading:

This condition may occur due to phase failure or direct overloading of motor. It causes increases in the current beyond rated current of motor. So heat produces inside the winding, causes damaging to the insulation of winding in turn burning of motor.

In majority of cases as a conventional method, bi-metallic relay is used for protection of the motor. However these bi-metallic relays have proved their unreliability & incapability of providing precise protection in electrical applications. Thermal overload relays with built in single phasing protection are expected to protect the motor against Single Phasing Faults & Overloading Faults.

On both these accounts, it has serious limitations.

Since Bi-Metal relay employ electro-mechanical construction & need the bi-metal to be heated up before it actuates so it takes longer time for tripping.

Due to many moving parts, Bi-Metal relay will have more wear & tear compared to Electronic /Micro Controller based relay.

So, Microprocessor based Motor Protection relay is very economical in comparison with thermal overload relays, if it saves the motor failure just for once, the cost of it is recovered.

Single Phase Protection Relay

During single phasing condition remaining two phases draw more currents (2-4 times of normal full load current). This is sensed as overload condition by Bi-Metallic Relay & it trips as per time proportionate to percentage of overload current. These currents are maximum at 100% loading hence relay has minimum tripping time delay, which is around 8-12 seconds.

 

But if single phasing occur during partial loading condition, Bi-Metallic Relay will have longer tripping time.


”If motor loading is below 57% Bi-Metallic Relay will not trip if single phasing occurs.”

 

Single Phasing Protection of Micro Controller Relay is independent of loading conditions. This is most important because motor needs to be protected against single phasing faults at all loading conditions.

 

The operation of Micro Controller based motor protection relays are not hampered by frequency of operations or operating temperature. As against this, the working of thermal relays changes with these conditions.

 

In Micro Controller based Motor Protection tripping time is very fast & accurate, but in case of thermal overload relay it is slow & due to that wide band accuracy is very poor.

For example if an unbalance of only 5% ( R phase = 415 V , Y phase = 415 V, B phase = 436 V) can reduce the out put by 25%, even though the motor continues to draw the same current as at the time of balanced condition. This means that the motor current has to increase under unbalanced condition in order to deliver the same power. This increase will result in motor heating.

Phase reversal in a three phase induction motor can be dangerous when the opposite direction not allow in certain applications like Non reversing gear box, Screw Compressors, Certain Specialized Pumps, Blower fan etc. In certain cases it hazards to operating personnel. Limitation of Current Monitoring conventional protection relays
:

 

When using phase failure relays, it should be noted that current sensing relays are superior in operation compared to voltage sensing relays. If voltage sensing relays are used, than these relays can provide phase failure protection only up to the point where they are connected. In case any type of phase failure (Current/Voltage base) occurs after the sensing point, the relay will not trip.

 

If the wire cuts/open between contractor output to load, or kit of contractor get open in one phase, Voltage based preventer (VPR) does not trip because of voltage is present at its sensing point. But at motor three phase voltage does not reach. There for it is not adequate protection for phase failure. A current sensing relay provides protection for the entire system (Input to load) & not up to the sensing terminals.

 

If any wire cut / open though out from input to load (motor), the current flowing in particular wire becomes zero. So, output of the CT becomes zero. Which detected by Motor Protection Device or Relay & it trips the motor.

 

In case of phase failure the phase that has been failed, sometimes this back emf can be equivalent to input supply voltage. A voltage sensing relay or device predicts it as healthy condition & will not trip the motor that will continue to run on two phase. But in current sensing relay it is not affected. Under phase failure condition current in the phase that has failed, goes to zero & thus current sensing relay detects phase failure.

 

Moreover voltage sensing relay will more to get faulty as they have to take three phase voltage into their electronic circuit for sensing & hence all the spares, surges & fluctuations of supply affect life of its sensing circuit components. In case of current sensing relays the electronic circuit senses very low voltage current signals coming out from output of CTs & hence it sensing circuit components operate in safe supply conditions.

 

Therefore even as a general consideration a single phasing preventer operating of current sensing principle is the correct method for effective protection of the motor.
